Rules 1956

Derek Soames kindly supplied us with his membership book from 1956 – here are the “bye-laws and regulations”….. (Caps and punctuation as printed by Lamberts of Settle.


1– That Visitors day and weekly Tickets for angling with artificial fly only will be issued at a price of 15/- and £2-2s-0d. each from the 16th day of March to the 30th day of September inclusive.

2– That the methods of fishing for members shall be with artificial fly, or minnow or worm. Col. Geldard’s length (Rathmell) may be fished with any legal bait.

3– That no salmon spawn, maggots or medicated baits shall be used, nor ground baiting or “feeding” is permitted in any part of the Club’s preserves.

4– That no more than 5 brace of trout to be taken away in any one day. There is no limit on the number of Grayling to be taken.

5– That all trout under 10 inches in length must be returned to the water.

6– That the length of the river between Penny Bridge (Gas Works) and Runley Bridge is reserved for FLY FISHING ONLY.

7– That Sunday fishing for members and visitors shall be restricted to South of the Runley Bridge and North of the Locks Wier.  Lt. Col. Birkbeck’s length may be fished on SUNDAY with fly only.

8– At the end of every season each member shall submit to the Secretary a record of fish caught.
